Ad Design assignment one- good vs. bad ads

What makes a good advertisement stand out and grab the attention of the reader through page after page of a magazine or website? On the contrary, what kinds of ads receive little or no attention and are quickly skipped past without hesitation? I am sure that there are many reasons why some ads are considered good and some considered bad depending on the viewer, their social background and interests, etc. My opinion on the topic is: good ads are aesthetically clean and clear, have a bold statement and swift persuasion to believing in the product being sold to you. An example of a "good ad" is this Coca Cola ad. It is clear that a gulp of Coca Cola will quench your thirst and bring a smile to your face.

An example of a "bad ad" in my opinion is one that's message is not as clear due to visual aesthetics, or carries a negative underlying message to a targeted audience. An example of a bad ad is this clothing ad. In my opinion, this ad is not artistically or visually as interesting as other clothing ads. It also carries a negative massage to girls about being abnormally thin. This particular model was touched up beyond compare and recently caused a controversial issue in the media.
